Ergonomic Vs Convention: Facts You Need To Know

Posted by Vert Work on

Most of office computer users keep on complaining of neck pain and eye strain. Studies reveal that conventional way of monitor placement is extremely harmful to users. It can cause several health issues such as vision loss etc.

As per work safety standards, it is advised to follow latest work safety guidelines to avoid irritation and eye strain after long hour computer usage. Note that, most of the vision issues results just because of improper lighting arrangement, poor screen positioning and screen glare that makes things difficult to read. By adjusting few environmental and physical settings, it is possible to maintain suitable placement for the computer.

Health experts always advise practicing ergonomics by maintaining upright seated posture by simply placing the monitor at eye level. The improper placement of computer usually causes neck pain, back pain, and shoulder stiffness. From past few years, so many cases of vision loss are registered just because of wrong monitor placement in office premises.

As per the convention of monitor placement at the workstation, the best idea is to maintain an upright neutral posture for the neck. Reports say that best viewing angle should be exactly perpendicular to the spine where eyes look straight on a computer screen and neck bending is avoided as much as possible. This is the simplistic way of understanding computer ergonomics and it should be followed by all computer users. But the recent updates from medical health world reveal that this upright posture with horizontal viewing angles and high monitor placement leads to some additional strain on eyes and users may need to bend their neck backward, again and again, to feel relaxed.

Actually, the visual system is completely controlled by several small muscles that stay around eyes. In order to achieve the best visual target, all of those muscles must work actively to maintain focus on eyes. But the conventional method of computer placement makes reading material on screen either too high or too close to eyes. When objects are too close to eyes, it increases strain on the visual system due to improper muscle contraction. Also, horizontal viewing also causes wide opening of eyes and it is the major cause behind dry eyes.

Ergonomics ensures right viewing angle for computer users. As per ISO ergonomic standards; for the gaze angle, it must be maintained at -35 degrees downward from the horizon. For optimal placement of monitor as per resting angle, the measurement must be somewhere around +/- 15 degrees. The latest data for ergonomics reveals that best angle for placement of monitor or computer screen is somewhere between -20 degrees and -50 degrees.

In order to maintain your workstation as per ergonomics, it is important to use customised work desk arrangements that can ensure complete comfort to computer users. It is advised to install ergonomic desks at workspaces so that person can work so long without suffering any eye strain. It is the best way to increase productivity in the office and can also reduce the cost involved in medical bills. Collect more details about office ergonomics at Vert Work.
